Your Visit to the Museum

There are four permanent exhibition galleries at the Gold Museum, and two more for temporary exhibitions. Texts relating to the permanent exhibitions are bilingual, in Spanish and English. A limited number of lockers are available, where you can leave your packages, should you so wish.

The tour will take you at least one and a half hours, but you will find enough of interest to warrant spending two hours, or four, or even to return for many different visits. Don’t forget to visit the shop and to have a break in the San Alberto caféAracataca is our restaurant (1st floor), with traditional Colombian food and dishes inspired by Cartagena de Indias. Find the menu at: www.restaurantearacataca.com.

  • Second floor. The Working of Metals gallery describes the mining and manufacturing techniques used by the ancient metallurgists.
  • Second floor. The People and Gold in pre-Hispanic Colombia gallery explains how metals were used in the context of political and religious organisation.
  • Third floor. The Cosmology and Symbolism gallery explores mythical themes, shamanism, and the symbology of metals.
  • Third floor. The Offering gallery immerses visitors in the world of offering ceremonies. The tour of the permanent exhibition ends in this gallery.

The Exploratorium, on the fourth floor, is an area that encourages interactivity and reflection on the diversity and meaning of the heritage that is preserved at the Museum.

How to Get to the Museum

To travel to the city centre, take a Transmilenio bus in the Las Aguas direction and alight at Museo del Oro station.

If you plan to drive to the Gold Museum, you should arrive along 5th Avenue from the north. The Museum does not offer parking, there are several commercial car parks in the area.

Seventh Avenue, Bogotá’s historic main thoroughfare, has been pedestrianised between 11th Street (Bolívar Square, Cathedral, El Sagrario Chapel) and 24th Street. Don’t miss visiting colonial-era San Francisco church, with its gold-coated altar, right opposite the Museum, then walk along 7th Avenue to 11th Street to see Bolívar Square and visit the Banco de la República Botero Museum and Miguel Urrutia Museum of Art (MAMU) at 11th Street between 4th and 5th Avenues.

Accessibility and Inclusion

The Gold Museum has wheelchair access via the ramp at the entrance for groups on 16th Street.

The lift opposite the entrance to the restaurant serves all the permanent exhibitions (floors 2 and 3) and the café in basement - 1. The lift next to the wheelchair access entrance serves the permanent exhibitions and the temporary ones in basement - 2 (temporary exhibitions gallery) and on the fourth floor (Exploratorium gallery).

There is a wheelchair-accessible toilet on the first floor, opposite the Information Point.

A limited number of wheelchairs and chairs for small children are available free of charge at the Information Point.

If your group includes people with a visual or cognitive disability, we suggest you join one of the organised guided tours (see above); the Museum guide will provide a tour that is suitable for everyone. For deaf people, we offer thematic tours in Colombian sign language, with appointment ( serviciosmo@banrep.gov.co o 601 3432222).

Pets are not allowed in the Gold Museum, except for properly trained assistance animals that serve as guides for visually impaired individuals or those authorized as emotional support animals by medical prescription with the corresponding certification. We recommend having the certificate available, either digitally or in print, to present to Museum staff upon entry. Emotional support animals must be handled in accordance with essential guidelines, including adhering to basic rules of coexistence, remaining in their carrier or equipped with the necessary accessories to avoid disrupting other visitors, being supervised at all times, following the instructions of Museum staff.
